Basel World

Every spring Basel hosts the largest watch and jewelry trade show in the world. I thought it would be a good place to draw people, something I'm trying to practice more often. It was very busy outside the exhibition center and I quickly became frustrated by not being able to sketch the (fast-moving) visitors. I decided to draw some parked car instead. In that moment, two policemen crossed the road towards me and asked me what I was drawing. When I showed it to them, they said it was nice and left, wishing me a good day. They were very friendly and didn't bother me at all, but I thought it was a funny idea, that somebody drawing on a piece of paper could do more harm than the thousand of visitors taking pictures with their digital cameras. Well, I guess we could take it as a compliment.

  1. Great Sketches as always, Javier :) It almost feels as if they were in motion.

Also, you may already know this, Felix Scheinberger has published some interesting anecdotes about sketching in public in his book "Mut zum Skizzenbuch". He mentioned that the only time he ever had to tear a page out of his sketchbook, was one time in Turkey, when an older gentleman was offended by him being included in the sketch without having been asked. Very bizzare :)

  5. Danke an alle für die Kommentare.
Stjepan, I know the book exist, but I thought it was mainly a collection of sketches. After your comment I see it can also make for an interesting reading. Thanks for the tip.
